New Hokkaido Shinkansen Route Opened

Asia Talk-JapanOn March 26, 2016, the Hokkaido shinkansen which will connect Shin-Hakodate Hokuto in Hokkaido with Shin-Aomori via the Seikan Tunnel is scheduled to commence operations. This will allow travelers to access the cultural highlights of Hakodate from the capital in just four hours.

Destination Asia Japan has created a spectacular full day excursion that reveals the city’s known highlights – and some lesser known that shouldn’t be missed. Rich in history with breathtaking views at every turn, Hakodate is home to Fort Goryokaku, a star shaped Western style citadel, built in the last years of the Edo Period for the defense of Hakodate. The fort is now a public park, one of Hokkaido’s best cherry blossom spots (blooming in early May in this cooler part of the Japanese Archipelago), and the Former Magistrate Office in the centre of the fort can still be visited.

Toward the end of the day guests can ascend by ropeway to the top of Mt. Hakodate. We will time the tour to arrive just after sunset, witnessing a night panorama that is considered one of the three most beautiful in Japan.
