Pindaya Cave Shimmers with Gold Buddha

Destination Asia Burma has a great optional excursion for those traveling the route from Kalaw to Nyangh Shwe. High above Pindaya on a limestone ridge above Pone Taloke Lake is a winding collection of natural caves that are literally bursting full with statues of Buddha. Many of the statues – approximately 9000 in total – are hundreds of years old and can be found in all shapes, colors and sizes. A series of stairways lead to the cave, with most starting their ascent from the white zedi of Nget Pyaw Taw Pagoda.

Another nearby ‘must-experience’ destination is Inle Lake, a place that is not only a site of outstanding natural beauty, but one to immerse in cultural oddities. A five day market rotates between towns in the region and is overflowing with various tribes’ people selling their hand-made wares. For an unforgettable experience, float skywards in a hot air balloon and bask in spectacular views of the mountains and lake below, watching the fishermen who row their boats standing on one leg.
