Unique & Unusual Places to Stay: Amongst the Wilderness

In the Clouds in Laos

Embark on a challenging trek up to the summit of Phou Louey the “Forever Mountain” (Elev. 2257m) – the third highest peak in Laos and one of the few cloud forests in the region. This trek through the evergreen forest leads guests through Nam Et-Phou Louey National Protected Area in Northern Laos. The latest ecotourism attraction here, forming part of the ‘Cloud Forest Climb’ experience includes staying overnight in ‘The Nests’.

The project has been developed in collaboration with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment and the Wildlife Conservation Society. The Nests provide a revolutionary way to observe wildlife from the comfort of spherical baskets hanging in the trees. ‘The Cloud Forest Climb’ is a more adventurous trekking option (four or five days), including ‘The Nests’, taking guests up to the summit of Phou Louey (Forever Mountain), through one of the few cloud forests in the region. These new tours will be operated in collaboration with surrounding villages, directly benefiting 12 villages through a village development fund while encouraging local people to protect endangered wildlife.

Luxury Temple Camping in Cambodia

The Tented Camp offers guests luxurious, comfortable and fully furnished accommodations within the main temple complex of Banteay Chhmar. The tents are erected in close proximity to the western gallery of the temple. Experience a sense of peace, calm and step back into another time and place by exploring the 12th century temple ruins hidden amongst the trees and overgrowth. The natural condition of the temple and its remote setting is unlike many of the other temples from the Angkorian era. The tents are environmentally low-impact and are easily taken down leaving only a small patch of depressed grass.

Guests will sleep in the tents, have meals prepared and delivered to the tent site or nearby within the temple complex. They also receive a temple tour from an English-speaking CBT guide, listen to traditional music while dining and are able to take part in other activities such as taking an ox-cart tour, visiting the Soieries du Mekong Silk Center, the other satellite temples and the village market. Activities can be arranged and adapted as desired. The Tented Camp was awarded the prestigious 2014 Grand Award for Heritage and Culture by the Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA).

Beach Camping in the Myeik Archipelago

Destination Asia Myanmar has created a unique private camping experience on a private Myeik Archipelago island. From the port of Myeik, guests board a private charter speed boat at the jetty to visit Thayaw Thahan Kyi Island. To reach this magnificent, paradise-like island, we pass through mangrove forests and a scattering of other islands dotted in the Andaman Sea.

On arrival, guests step onto a glistening shoreline, with options to discover the luminous sea by snorkeling or taking out a kayak. Following our explorations of the island, we then watch the sun set over the Andaman Sea while sitting back to enjoy the blaze of colors that play over the horizon. Rising from beachside tents in the morning, we then embark on a boat trip to visit other nearby islands to swim amongst its colorful coral area or kayak on the water – you can even try your hand at fishing before sailing back in style.
