Malaysia is Simply Paradise for the Roti Enthusiast

Roti is the generic Malaysian term for bread, but it refers more often to a certain type of layered flatbread that’s widely popular here. Originating from the Indian subcontinent and brought here during the spice trade, there are more than 20 varieties to munch your way through.

Most popular is the ubiquitous roti canai, served either savoury or sweet. Its unusual layering produces that unique flaky texture and flavour which makes it a must-have, especially for breakfast.  Roti tisu is roti canai’s paper-thin cousin, served wrapped around a large cone, hence its alternative name – rocket roti or roti helicopter. Children love roti tisu drizzled with condensed milk.

Then there’s roti jala, tosai, paratha, chapati, bhatura and puri. Some of those names may sound familiar to adventurous foodies but wait until you try them Malaysian style.

Favourite side dishes are dhal, chicken or fish curry and the famous kuah campur mixed curry. Come and enjoy!
