Revised Langkawi tourism in effect from January

Starting 1 January, the Langkawi Tourism Tax has been revised. The surcharge will be based on the hotel’s star rating, so guests at one-star or two-star hotels are charged an extra RM1 per room per night, with the surcharge rising to RM3 for three-star or four-star accommodation, RM5 for five stars, RM7 for six stars and RM9 for seven stars. These are payable by guests directly to the hotel.

A further surcharge comes into effect at peak periods when there are premier events in Langkawi. Using the same star-based structure, the surcharge will rise to RM6 at the more modest hotels to RM20 for deluxe accommodation. Precise dates are yet to be finalised, but the extra charge is expected to apply during the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition in May, as well as Le Tour de Langkawi, Ironman Langkawi, and Oceanman Langkawi.

The Kedah Tourism Committee shared that the revenue will be used to fund improvements to public facilities and services for the over three million travellers that visit Langkawi each year.
