Meet Kamonrat, Head of Leisure and Reservations in Thailand

We caught up with Khun Kamonrat, Leisure & Reservations Manager at Destination Asia Thailand, to better understand how travellers are connecting with Thailand today. With extensive experience supporting guests across the country, she provides insights into the latest booking trends, charming cultural encounters, and what makes Thailand such a rewarding destination.

What booking trends have you noticed in Thailand over the past 12 months?

We’ve seen travellers prioritising value without compromising on quality, with four-star hotels being the most popular choice. Bookings are generally confirmed much closer to the travel date than in the past, with lead times averaging just one to three months, compared to 6 months – 1 year previously.

Have you noticed any shifts in how people are travelling?

Yes, many visitors now prefer shorter stays in each destination so they can combine several regions within a single trip. In Thailand, we often see travellers combining, Chiang Rai, Chiang Mai, and Phuket or Krabi in one trip. There’s also a growing awareness of sustainability, with travellers increasingly interested in eco-friendly products such as the Chiang Mai city tour by cycling or electric tuk-tuk, visiting the Koh Klang local community in Krabi, and tours that align with our animal welfare policy.

Are travellers requesting more personalised or themed itineraries?

Absolutely. We’re seeing rising demand for itineraries that highlight specific travel themes such as culture, wellness, adventure, and responsible tourism. Guests want itineraries that reflect their personal interests, from food-focused journeys to sustainable escapes.

How does your team handle customisations and special requests?

The guest’s preferences are always our starting point. During the planning stage, we qualify their needs, whether that’s hotel style, purpose-driven travel, or a milestone celebration, and then tailor the itinerary accordingly.

We use an industry-leading booking system called Travel Studio to manage all details, ensuring our internal teams have clear visibility on special requests, policies, and pricing. From there, we deliver a personalised proposal and remain in close communication with the travel advisor to refine the journey until it’s perfect.

What makes managing leisure travel in Thailand most rewarding?

For me, it’s supporting sustainable tourism through animal welfare products and eco-friendly partners and showcasing Thailand’s cultural depth through community-based tourism. When guests connect meaningfully with local people, it makes their trip truly memorable.

Can you share an example of a particularly meaningful booking?

One that stands out was for a couple from the United States travelling with accessibility needs. It was their first time in Thailand, and we designed a fully customised itinerary around their interests in culture, food, and the beach. Seeing their excitement and hearing their feedback at the end of the journey was extremely rewarding for the whole team and something we are extremely proud of.

How do you and your team stay up to date on new hotels and seasonal highlights?

We regularly attend product and hotel presentations, take part in training sessions, and conduct site inspections to experience properties and activities first-hand. This ensures we can recommend the most current options to our partners.

What advice would you give someone planning their first trip to Thailand?

Pack light and breathable clothing for the tropical climate, try as many Thai dishes as possible, and always take the time to learn and respect Thai culture; it will enrich the entire journey. Thai people are very friendly and appreciate a warm smile.

Why should travel planners use a DMC, and what value does your team add?

Working with a DMC keeps travel planning streamlined and organised. At Destination Asia Thailand we provide comprehensive on-the-ground support, from arrival representatives to assistance whenever it is needed to ensure travellers feel looked after at every step. We can also secure better value through our networks, manage logistics seamlessly, and maintain strict health and safety compliance. And most importantly, we offer insider access to authentic local experiences while handling all special requests. That expertise is what turns a well-planned trip into a smooth, safe, and unforgettable journey.
