A Cambodian landmark springs back to life

Bokor Mountain is rising to life once again, blending Cambodia’s storied past with striking modern developments. Once a silent witness to elegant colonial days and war-torn decades, the mountain now hosts enormous resorts, casinos, residential projects, and the beginnings of a colossal 100-metre seated Buddha that emerges through the mists.

A motorised half-day exploration from Kampot turns the journey itself into an adventure. Hairpin bends climb over a thousand metres through dense rainforest as gibbons and macaques watch from the treetops. The cool mountain air and the soft rustle of leaves set the tone for the dramatic landscape unfolding ahead.

At the summit, the road levels and the mountain’s landmarks come into view: the grand but ghostly Bokor Palace Hotel, the King’s former summer residence, an abandoned Catholic church, and the statue of Yeay Mao, guardian spirit of the mountain. Each stop offers insight into the layered history of Bokor, where colonial grandeur meets the promise of modernity.

Bokor Mountain stands as Cambodia’s most vivid dialogue between past and present, a destination where dramatic scenery, wildlife and cultural heritage come together for an unforgettable journey.
