Autonomous ferry takes to Japanese waters

Travellers to Japan’s Seto Inland Sea will soon have a new and innovative way to explore the region, with the launch of the world’s first fully autonomous passenger ferry. Operated by Kokusai Ryobi Ferry Co., the Olympia Dream Seto will connect Okayama on the mainland with the island of Shodoshima, offering a 70 minute crossing that combines advanced technology with scenic coastal views.

After successfully completing a series of semi autonomous trials, the vessel has now received approval to operate without direct human control, with services expected to begin in March. For passenger reassurance, a trained crew will remain on board to monitor the journey and intervene if required, ensuring a smooth and comfortable crossing. With capacity for up to 500 passengers, the ferry represents a significant step forward in maritime travel.

Beyond the novelty of the journey itself, the new service places a welcome spotlight on Shodoshima, an island known for its gentle pace and distinctive landscapes. Often compared to Mediterranean seaside towns, it features olive groves, dramatic coastlines, luscious rice terraces. Visitors can explore traditional soy sauce breweries, enjoy a growing local art scene and experience a side of Japan that feels far removed from its major cities.

Over time, this technology is expected to improve access to many of Japan’s inland islands, making destinations like Shodoshima easier to reach and more appealing for travellers seeking authentic and lesser known experiences.
