New rules have been introduced for climbing Mount Fuji ahead of the summer season, expanding safety measures that were initially applied to the Yoshida Trail last year. The updated guidelines now apply to all trails on the mountain.
Effective immediately, all climbers are required to:
– Pay a mandatory entrance fee of ¥4,000
– Register their details online in advance
– Complete a short online course or test on safety and manners before beginning their climb
Trail access is restricted between 2:00 p.m. and 3:00 a.m., unless climbers have a reservation at a mountain hut. Daily numbers on the Yoshida Trail will be limited to 4,000 climbers to reduce overcrowding and environmental impact.
The measures have been broadly accepted as necessary steps to protect the mountain and improve safety for both novice and experienced climbers. Authorities have placed particular focus on reducing “bullet climbing,” a practice involving overnight ascents without rest, which has led to cases of altitude sickness and emergency incidents in recent years.
Climbers are being asked to plan ahead, make reservations early and approach the mountain with respect for both the natural environment and personal wellbeing.
