Vietnam’s First Metro Opens in Hanoi

A city of 8.3 million people, Hanoi is plagued by traffic congestion during rush hour due to a large number of motorbikes and cars. However, the recent opening of the city’s – and the country’s – first metro route has stirred hopes that the country will soon catch up with its regional peers, popularize public transportation and reduce traffic congestion.

The Cat Linh – Ha Dong route is one of 10 metro routes planned for Hanoi by 2030 with a total length of 417km, 82 percent of which is elevated and the rest underground. In the first weeks, the service will be from 5.30 am to 8pm every day with a train every 15 minutes. The frequency will be increased from the second week with a train leaving every 10 minutes. After six months, the service will be extended to 10.30 pm, and there will be a train every six minutes during rush hour.
