Discover a new walking adventure through the stunning natural wonder of southern Laos, starting from Ban Kiet Ngong village near Pakse and leading through the wetlands of the Xe Pian National Protection Area.
The trail runs alongside a expansive tranquil lake and offers more than a few glimpses of wildlife, including a diverse range of bird species such as Blyth’s kingfisher, the rufous-necked Hornbill, beautiful nuthatch, short-tailed parrotbill and yellow-vented warbler. Birds are, of course, seasonal creatures so sighting them cannot be guaranteed every day of the year, but more often that not, at least one of each species listed above are able to be spotted along the way.
After a delicious picnic lunch, the trail continues with a hiking adventure through tropical forests to the legendary Wat Phou Asa temple. This famous archaeological wonder is a magnificent stone structure which served as a temple about a millennium ago. It’s surrounded by heavenly, lotus-filled reservoirs and distinctive, unique columns made of plate-like rocks which stand proudly as if guarding it. The summit of Phu Asa opens out to provide a stunning view over large, rolling areas of wetland and is said to be similar to Angkor Wat, minus the crowds!
