The Kagoshima prefecture, one Japan’s four main islands, has a relaxed, friendly tempo and some magnificent scenery, yet it’s perhaps less known to visitors, especially those from overseas. That may be about to change, as rail operator JR Kyushu opened Sengan-en Station on 15 March, giving fast, easy access from the centre of the prefecture’s capital, Kagoshima, and opening up a whole new vista of sightseeing opportunities.
The first thing that greets travellers as they alight at the new stop is the simply breathtaking view of Kinko Bay and the magnificent Sakurajima volcano, a truly impressive sight that resembles an illustration from an ancient Japanese story book. Then there’s Sengan-en Garden, a nationally designated scenic spot that offers fascinating insights into the 800-year legacy of the Shimazu family, one of Japan’s oldest and most famous warrior clans.
Visitors may also want to visit the Former Shuseikan Area, part of the UNESCO World Heritage site and an enthralling example of Japan’s Meiji Industrial Revolution, or simply wander among the landscaped tranquil gardens and ornate pagodas. It’s beautiful, it’s timeless and it’s a taste of quintessential Japan.
