Exploring Cambodia’s emerging western touring route

As part of its annual staff outing, the Destination Asia Cambodia team travelled across western Cambodia, combining time together outside the office with the opportunity to explore one of the country’s most exciting emerging touring routes and gain first-hand insight into new experiences and destinations.

Travelling along the newly completed Road 10, the journey linked Battambang with Koh Kong, passing through remote farmland, rural communities and the limestone karst landscapes of the west. With the arrival of the rainy season, the scenery shifted into vivid green panoramas, revealing a lesser-seen side of Cambodia’s natural environment.

Moving deeper into the Cardamom Mountains, the team stayed at Samanea Wellness Resort, using the stop to better understand one of the region’s newer hospitality offerings and its place within this developing corridor. The itinerary continued through one of Southeast Asia’s most important forest ecosystems, where a series of conservation-focused properties highlighted different approaches to sustainable tourism, including Cardamom Tented Camp, Canvas & Orchids and Shinta Mani Wild.

Each property showcased a distinct balance between hospitality and environmental protection, from community-led initiatives to immersive low-impact jungle stays. As the route continued towards the coast, improved connectivity along Road 10 demonstrated how previously remote areas are becoming increasingly accessible for multi-stop touring itineraries.

The journey concluded at Sambor Prei Kuk, where a cycling experience through the pre-Angkorian temple complex offered a final cultural perspective, highlighting the role of community-based tourism in preserving Cambodia’s heritage.

Blending team bonding with destination discovery, the annual trip reinforced both the diversity of experiences now available across Cambodia and the growing potential of its expanding overland touring network.
