Meet Patrick Chase, our Expert in Indochina

We recently sat down with Patrick Chase, Regional Director of Sales, to gain his insight into what makes Indochina such a rewarding region for travelers. With years of experience based in Cambodia and close collaboration with teams in Vietnam and Laos, Patrick offers a unique perspective on how to craft meaningful and immersive journeys across these three diverse countries.

What makes Indochina a standout destination for leisure travelers today?

Indochina is home to three distinct countries that each offer something extraordinary. Vietnam stands out for its dynamic energy, from fast-paced cities to serene countryside. Cambodia continues to grow as a standalone destination with immersive cultural experiences beyond Angkor. And Laos, still one of Asia’s best-kept secrets, offers untouched beauty and warm hospitality, especially when you travel beyond Luang Prabang and Vang Vieng. What unites them is a shared history of resilience, as each has shaped its own path to independence. The diversity across the region, from street food scenes to remote highland villages, makes every journey rich and rewarding.

Can you share a recent unique tour or activity you’ve seen in Indochina?

One of the most scenic journeys right now is the new Heritage Connection rail experience across the Hai Van Pass, linking Hue and Hoi An. It is a breathtaking way to explore Vietnam’s central coastline. In Cambodia, Kulen Elephant Forest near Siem Reap has become a favorite for ethical wildlife encounters that align with our Animal Welfare Policy. In Laos, Namkat Yorla Pa in Oudomxay offers a unique escape into nature with canopy walks, ziplines, and river adventures, perfect for those wanting a soft-adventure break in stunning surroundings.

How do you stay up to date with new trends and emerging experiences in the leisure travel sector?

Living in Siem Reap and working closely with our teams across Indochina keeps me deeply connected to what is happening on the ground. I regularly travel through Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos, and we are always in contact with guides, hoteliers, and partners to uncover what is new. Often, it is the local guides who are the first to share insider tips or fresh ideas. I also stay connected through industry associations and regional tourism networks.

What are three experiences that help visitors connect deeply with the local culture?

Food is a gateway to culture, and Vietnam’s culinary scene offers endless ways to connect, from street food tours in Hanoi to hands-on cooking classes in Hoi An. Visiting ethnic minority communities in northern Vietnam gives guests a chance to learn about traditions that have been passed down for generations. In Cambodia, exploring the temples of Angkor with an expert guide brings more than just history to life. It reveals a spiritual heritage that still shapes daily life across the region.

Any lesser-known destinations in Indochina that you recommend?

Pu Luong Valley, just a few hours southwest of Hanoi, is breathtaking. Rice terraces, misty hills, and White Tai minority culture make it a standout for nature lovers and hikers. In Cambodia, Jahoo Gibbon Camp in the Seima Protected Forest offers a rare opportunity to see gibbons in their natural habitat while staying in eco-friendly lodges. For those seeking something truly remote, the Vieng Xai Caves in northeast Laos offer a window into the country’s history and a peaceful contrast to more visited areas.

How do we ensure our Indochina tours are accessible and inclusive for all types of travelers?

Most of our programs are privately guided, which allows for a high level of flexibility and personalisation. During the planning phase, we pay close attention to each client’s preferences and requirements, whether that is mobility needs, dietary restrictions, or special interests, so we can design a seamless and inclusive experience from start to finish.

From hidden mountain villages to vibrant cities and ancient temples, Patrick and his team bring Indochina to life through expertly crafted, personalised journeys. For more information about the region, contact the team at [email protected]
