Chiang Mai’s shimmering silver temple experience

Hidden within the traditional silver-making district of Chiang Mai, Wat Sri Suphan, often known as the Silver Temple, offers one of the city’s most distinctive cultural experiences. Covered almost entirely in silver, nickel, and aluminium, the temple is a striking modern interpretation of traditional Lanna architecture and remains unlike any other temple in Thailand.

From its shimmering exterior to intricately detailed silverwork panels and Buddha statues, every corner of the temple reflects the craftsmanship of the local silversmith community that has shaped this area of Chiang Mai for generations. Rather than relying on conventional restoration techniques, the temple’s abbot worked alongside local artisans to preserve and showcase traditional metalworking skills through the temple’s design.

Located in the Wualai district just south of Chiang Mai’s old city, the temple also serves as a living centre for the region’s silversmith heritage. Visitors can explore workshops where craftsmen and monks continue to create detailed metalwork by hand, alongside exhibitions showcasing the history, techniques and notable artisans connected to the community.

Inspired by the artistry of Wat Sri Suphan, the experience can continue beyond the temple itself through a private silver jewellery workshop. Guided by skilled local artisans, guests are introduced to traditional silverworking techniques before creating their own handcrafted piece inspired by the intricate details and patterns found throughout the temple.

Blending culture, craftsmanship, and hands-on creativity, the experience offers a deeper connection to one of Chiang Mai’s most enduring artistic traditions.
