A trip to Japan’s most revered shrine

Nestled in the heart of Ise City in Mie Prefecture, the Ise Grand Shrine is widely considered the most sacred and prestigious of all shrines in Japan. With a rich history dating back over a thousand years, it attracts worshippers and visitors from across the globe, who come to pay their respects and soak up the unique architecture and breathtaking natural surroundings.

Honouring Shinto, Japan’s indigenous religion, the complex actually comprises 125 shrines including Naiku, its most hallowed site where Amaterasu Omikami, the deity that represents the sun, is venerated.

A visit here can be completed in a day, although we suggest an overnight stay so guests can explore at their own leisurely pace. While the Grand Shrine is clearly the centrepiece, there’s plenty to see and do around the Ise Bay area, with plentiful opportunities to wander the surrounding historical districts, lounge on its sandy beaches and indulge in delicious local delicacies such as spiny lobster and abalone.
