Rooftop hawker elegance for luxury cruise line

The brief: A leading luxury expedition cruise line tasked us with creating a one-off rooftop dinner in Singapore that would transport their guests into the heart of the island’s hawker culture, while maintaining the sophistication expected of a five-star experience.

The brief called for more than just a meal; it had to be a richly immersive moment that reflected local heritage, with flavours, aesthetics, and storytelling all woven together. With only a single evening ashore, this dinner needed to be flawless in execution and unforgettable in delivery.

Outcome and challenges:The Marina Bay Sands SkyPark, home to the iconic Ce La Vi rooftop, provided a breathtaking backdrop. However, its popularity also meant significant constraints: a limited two-hour window for setup, shared access to the cargo lifts, and a need for complete transformation within tight space and time parameters.

To overcome these logistical challenges, the Destination Asia Events team worked closely with the venue and all stakeholders. Thanks to strong partnerships, we secured an extended four-hour setup window, crucial for achieving the vision.

The rooftop was reimagined as an elegant tribute to old Singapore. Hawker stands were built within traditional atap house frames, paired with rustic wooden benches and nostalgic décor. Guests were welcomed by lively kampong boy dancers and entertained by a lion dance and changing mask performance, adding cultural vibrancy and visual spectacle.

Ambient lighting, curated 1960s Chinese classical music, and nine hawker-style food stations created an atmosphere that was both elevated and deeply rooted in place. Dishes like chilli crab and satay were presented with care, not only in taste but in storytelling each bite a tribute to Singapore’s culinary soul.

With precision planning, immersive design, and local flair, the result was a truly standout event: a rooftop banquet that felt timeless, personalised, and unlike any other stop on the cruise.
