From South to North and Back: A Family Road Trip in Vietnam

With one of the lowest number of cases and deaths worldwide, Vietnam’s COVID-19 journey has stood out in Southeast Asia and across the world. At the time of publishing, Vietnam has recorded just 1,281 cases and 35 deaths. Despite the closure of borders, the domestic tourism market has flourished.

During the quiet months of Summer, Destination Asia Vietnam’s General Manager, Julien Monnerie, made a 55-day trip covering 6,500km with his family; taking the opportunity to look for new products and destinations and inspect hotels and restaurants. After renting a car, the family of four drove from Ho Chi Minh City in the South to Sapa in the North and back, stopping at 12 destinations and stayin in more than 30 hotels.

While it was “extremely intense” with two children aged 5 and 1, Julien described it as a “once in a lifetime experience, especially for our children still talking about ‘the trip’.”
