Maiiam Museum in Chiang Mai Now Member of ‘Leading Culture Destinations’

Chiang Mai’s Maiiam Museum has just been given the award for Best New Museum of Asia Pacific, making it the first Thai Museum to be recognized at the Leading Culture Destinations Awards.

Now in their fourth year, this year’s Leading Culture Destinations event was held in London, where a jury of nine well-established cultural experts selected the winners across 16 categories.

Maiiam, meaning “brand new”, was opened in 2016 and occupies 3,000 m2 in the Sankhampaeng district of North Thailand. Located 30 minutes by car east of Chiang Mai center, the museum features permanent and transitory exhibitions from local and international artists.

Rachaporn Choochey, of the architectural firm Allzone, led the venue’s design team. Inspired by Lanna temples, the museum boasts a glistening facade made from mirror mosaic tiles.
