Destination Asia Japan has developed a new prestige experience that takes guests on an exclusive tour of the legendary Sennyu-ji Temple in Kyoto. Known as Mitera or the Royal Temple for its long-established ties to Japan’s imperial family, Sennyu-ji is a cornerstone of esoteric Buddhism. However, despite it being a significant site of this historic city, Sennyu-ji is much less visited than other famous Kyoto temples, retaining its tranquil atmosphere.
The adventure begins at the majestic Daimon Gate, where guests are warmly welcomed by a resident monk. They are guided through sacred halls and areas rarely accessible to the public, including the Reimeiden, where ancestral spirits are honored, and the Dragon Hall, adorned with breathtaking, intricate Buddhist motifs. Guests also visit the Reliquary Hall to view artifacts central to the temple’s spiritual legacy, while the monk provides profound insights into the Buddhist view of life.
Guests can further deepen their journey by choosing between two transformative experiences led by the monk. They may witness the ancient Goma fire ritual, a powerful ceremony symbolizing the burning away of worldly desires, or practice Ajikan meditation, a Shingon method for cultivating compassion and enlightenment.
