Preparing for take off, Cambodia’s all-new airport

Cambodia’s new Techo Takhmao International Airport is set to open on 9 September, with an official inauguration scheduled for 20 October. Located in Kandal province, just south of Phnom Penh, the airport is poised to significantly enhance the country’s connectivity and position as a high-end tourism destination.

Designed by renowned architects Foster + Partners, the airport will be the ninth largest in the world upon completion. Sustainability and cultural identity are at the heart of the design, which blends modern infrastructure with traditional Cambodian aesthetics. Tree-like roof structures, open-air elements, a central garden, and a dedicated cultural village will offer travellers an immersive introduction to Khmer heritage through crafts, cuisine, and performance.

With the capacity to accommodate large aircraft, including the Airbus A380, Techo Takhmao will open direct access from long-haul markets across Europe, the Middle East, and beyond. This improved connectivity is set to reduce travel times and provide a more seamless arrival experience for international visitors.

The development forms a key part of Cambodia’s national strategy to attract high-value travellers and support sustainable tourism growth. Already rising in global luxury travel rankings, the country’s commitment to infrastructure and destination development is clear. Techo Takhmao International Airport will serve not only as a transport hub but also as a new gateway to Cambodia’s evolving tourism landscape.
