The New World Harbour Race has been a popular event on the Hong Kong calendar since it was first held in 1906 and this year it is being held on 10 November. With courses that run across the bay between Wan Chai and the Avenue of Stars in Tsim Sha Tsui, the races feature serious competitive tussles as well as leisure events that are just for fun, with a total of 4,000 swimmers taking part.
A centrepiece of the day is the 11th Asian Open Water Swimming Championships, where each Asian country or territory sends teams of up to three male and three female representatives to battle it out in a 5km race. The leisure events are held over a less strenuous distance of about 1km.
An innovation for this year’s fun is a companion option, which enables participants to swim in pairs alongside a family member or friend. At the time of registering, participants were also invited to weave a charitable component into the race experience, by donating to Share for Good. This initiative helps to fund much needed support to underprivileged members of the community, with the total raised among the entrants to be fully matched by sponsors.
