Musical connections made in Malaysia

Destination Asia Malaysia is proud to introduce a new cultural program that brings guests closer to the rich heritage of Borneo through its most iconic instrument—the sape. Indigenous to the region, the sape is a beautifully crafted wooden instrument with four or six strings, a long, deep body often adorned with intricate carvings or paintings, and a short arm. Played like a guitar, its deep resonance creates a sound so rich and melodic, you might think it’s amplified.

At the heart of this experience is Uncle Solomon Gau, a renowned master in both crafting and playing the sape. He warmly welcomes guests to explore his passion for this extraordinary instrument, sharing captivating stories about its history, traditions, and the artistry involved in its creation. Guests will have the chance to marvel at his collection, which includes sapes that are decades old, and enjoy an enchanting live demonstration of the serene, soothing tones the sape produces.
