We spoke with Yogi Selvaraju, Senior Manager, Meetings & Events at Destination Asia Malaysia, to hear how a fresh perspective can shape exceptional events. Having joined the team just a year ago, Yogi reflects on his first 12 months with Destination Asia, sharing insights into how collaborative thinking, strong local expertise and thoughtful planning come together to create seamless, memorable experiences. He also discusses how approaching events from multiple angles allows the team to elevate concepts, surprise guests, and showcase Malaysia as a destination that leaves a lasting impression.
What makes your country unique for events compared to others in Southeast Asia?
What really makes Malaysia stand out is its mix of cultures, food and experiences. It is also easy to get to, easy to work in and offers excellent value. English is widely spoken and the country has modern venues, experienced suppliers and reliable infrastructure. With all that together, you can host an event in the city and enjoy heritage, nature or incentive activities without travelling far. On top of that, Malaysia offers warm hospitality and great service, making it a very flexible and memorable events destination.
Four major MICE destinations in Malaysia

Each offers unique experiences, from Kuala Lumpur’s modern convention centres to Penang’s rich heritage, Langkawi’s island resorts and Kota Kinabalu’s scenic nature-based activities. With experienced local partners and reliable infrastructure, Malaysia makes it easy to host professional and memorable events.
Are there any cultural traditions or customs that event planners should know about when organising events in your country?
Malaysia is a multicultural country, with Islam as the official religion. It is important for event planners to be mindful of cultural and religious practices here. Halal food options are widely available and commonly expected at events, while alcohol consumption is generally allowed at licensed venues but may be restricted in public or shared areas. It’s also good to be aware of major religious holidays when scheduling events. Dress codes are usually smart casual to business formal and modest attire is appreciated in certain settings. Overall, Malaysia is very welcoming and local partners are experienced in guiding planners through these considerations smoothly.
How does your country’s transportation system help make events run smoothly for attendees?
Getting around Malaysia is easy, which makes events stress-free for attendees. Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Langkawi and Kota Kinabalu are well connected by airports, highways and public transport. Taxis, e-hailing apps, train and shuttles make getting between hotels, venues and attractions simple. For bigger events, local transport providers are widely available too. With everything so easy to reach, attendees can focus on the event and enjoy their time without worrying about getting around.
What new trends are popular in your destination that improve group experiences? How do you stay updated with these trends?
In Malaysia, several new trends are enhancing group experiences for events. Interactive and immersive activities, such as teambuilding in natural settings, cultural workshops or hands-on traditional activities and foodie tours, are becoming more popular. To stay updated, we regularly follow industry publications, attend MICE conferences, collaborate with local partners and monitor client feedback. This ensures we can offer fresh, relevant and memorable experiences for every event.
What exclusive experiences can we offer to visitors in your country that they would not be able to access on their own?

We also deliver experiences that are not easily accessible to independent groups, supported by strong local partnerships and detailed logistical planning. These include private access to heritage venues in George Town, bespoke cultural performances in Sarawak, exclusive dining concepts in Kuala Lumpur and incentive programs in resort or lesser-known natural settings. Groups can also take part in meaningful CSR activities that uplift local communities and require coordination with authorities. This local expertise allows programs to go beyond standard itineraries and deliver experiences that are authentic and well-managed.
What specific CSR opportunities can groups participate in during events held in your country
Groups can take part in a wide range of meaningful CSR opportunities. These include building solar panels for aboriginal settlements, making wheelchairs for general hospitals as well as constructing shelves, cabinets or bedframes for local schools, old folk homes and children’s homes. Food donation drives are also popular ways to support those in need. In addition, teams can participate in environmental projects like tree planting, beach cleanups and wildlife conservation efforts to help protect Malaysia’s natural heritage. Groups can also engage in workshops with local communities or charitable organizations, providing valuable knowledge and support. These hands-on CSR activities can be tailored to fit the event schedule and group size, allowing participants to connect deeply with local communities.

How can Destination Asia make a difference to your next event?
For us, making a difference starts with how we think about events. We’re always looking at them from multiple angles, not just how to deliver what’s been asked, but how we can elevate it. Our role isn’t just to turn an event idea into reality, it’s to enhance it, and introduce ideas that make the experience more memorable and truly unique for guests.
Behind the scenes, there’s a huge amount of planning, coordination and communication, but the goal is that the client never feels that complexity. When an event is done well, the run sheet should be felt but not seen. Everything flows, transitions feel natural, and the experience is seamless for both our partner and their client. That level of ease comes from strong organisation, clear communication, and a team that’s always thinking several steps ahead.
We genuinely enjoy creating moments that leave people speechless and delivering events that spark curiosity, connection and a desire to explore more of Malaysia.
