A cycling itinerary highlighting the beauty of southern Japan

Japan’s tourist authorities have created a number of cycle routes around the country and this one, the Shimanami Kaido, is probably the most picturesque and varied. Many riders rate it the best in Japan, some even say it’s the most beautiful in the world and they may well have a point.

The 43-mile journey traces a route along – and often above, Japan’s Seto Inland Sea, linking a series of six islands with wonderful, iconic bridges. A keen cyclist could complete it in a day, but we’ve designed a three-day, two-night version, so riders can take their time and make the most of this beautiful corner of the world.

It begins in Onomichi, a pretty seaside town with winding streets and traditional Japanese houses. The tour starts from there, offering stunning panoramic views of azure waters that constantly change. Amid the lush countryside, there are quaint villages where the riders can stop and sample local delicacies that include fresh seafood and the gorgeous, refreshing citrus fruits the region is known for.

An expert guide leads the way and the accommodation that’s provided along the route is comfortable and, after a day of cycling, very welcome!
