New program celebrates Hong Kong’s industrial history

Step inside Hong Kong’s thriving factories and discover the craftsmanship behind some of the city’s most iconic products. Hong Kong became a global center for manufacturing in the 19th century, a tradition that expanded rapidly after World War II when it earned the nickname the workshop of the world. While much of the manufacturing has moved to mainland China, the city’s industrial legacy remains strong, with several major manufacturers continuing to operate locally.

To celebrate this proud heritage and support the government’s Made in HK initiative, Destination Asia Hong Kong has developed a half-day experience that offers a close-up look at four iconic brands that continue to produce in the territory. Guests will visit Lee Kum Kee to see how their famous sauces are crafted, Pat Chun to explore traditional herbal products, Kee Wah Bakery for freshly baked pastries, and Yakult to learn about advanced fermentation techniques. Each stop provides insight into innovative production methods, meticulous craftsmanship, and the dedication behind products beloved by locals and visitors alike.

The factories are preparing for the upcoming experiences by creating showrooms and visitor pathways, scheduled to be fully completed in the coming months. Visitors can enjoy an immersive experience, watching production processes in action, sampling products, and learning about the heritage and innovation that make Hong Kong manufacturing unique.

This experience is a fascinating opportunity for anyone interested in exploring Hong Kong beyond the typical tourist attractions and gaining a deeper understanding of its rich industrial culture.
