After a full three decades, the world-famous Hong Kong Sevens rugby tournament took place in Causeway Bay for the last time this year. From next year, it will be held at the newly emerging Kai Tak Stadium, a larger and much more modern venue, currently being built on the former airport site.
Opening in phases, with completion scheduled in ample time for next year’s Sevens in April, the 28-hectare sports park will feature a 50,000-seat main stadium with a retractable roof, an indoor centre to host sports and other events with up to 10,000 seats, and a public sports arena with a capacity of 5,000 seats. These will be complemented with extensive public retail and harbourfront dining spaces. So the networking, socialising and displays of sportsmanship which made the Sevens an essential date on the Hong Kong calendar will of course continue. But now it will be bigger and better than ever.
Needless to say, the stadium will be available for other events such as major concerts, which will help make Hong Kong an unmissable stop on any prestigious world tour.
