Pak Wayan has developed a reputation around Bali for his incredible expertise on all things nature, as well as his passion for the subject and his immense enthusiasm, which is engaging, infectious and inspiring.
Under his guidance, a group of local villagers have developed a firefly conservation centre, which is the focus of this experience. It’s said that fireflies were seen everywhere in Bali but they have become increasingly rare in recent years, with the centre representing their determined effort to turn that tide. Visitors can witness these enchanting insects and learn about their fascinating behaviours and life cycle. Then it’s on to the world’s first firefly conservation garden, an innovative sanctuary dedicated to their breeding, conservation and growth.
This memorable day begins with a chat with Pak himself, who is happy to talk about his life and work over a welcome drink and home made cake. It ends on an equally tasty note with a hands-on cooking session, guided by a seasoned Balinese chef. With the cooking done, guests are welcome to gather around the table and savour the fruits of their labour.
But the best is saved for last. As night falls and the darkness creeps in, the surrounding rice paddies come alive with the soft, pulsating glow of countless fireflies. Unforgettable!
