Tucked away in Japan’s mountainous Gifu Prefecture, the town of Takayama offers a rare glimpse into Edo-era Japan. Its beautifully preserved old quarter, lined with wooden merchant houses and narrow streets, becomes even more captivating each year on 9 and 10 October during the Takayama Autumn Festival.
First held in the 1600s, the festival is considered one of Japan’s most spectacular traditional celebrations. The highlight is the procession of ornate floats, or yatai, each elaborately decorated with intricate carvings, lacquer finishes, and golden details. In the evening, hundreds of lanterns illuminate the floats as they glide through the streets, creating a soft golden glow that fills the town with atmosphere. Performances of traditional music and appearances by karakuri mechanical dolls further bring the celebration to life.
The clear October skies and crisp autumn air add a seasonal charm, making Takayama especially inviting during this time. However, due to the festival’s popularity, accommodations and guided experiences are often booked well in advance. Travellers are encouraged to plan early to fully enjoy this unforgettable cultural event.
More than just a seasonal celebration, the Takayama Autumn Festival offers an immersive journey into the craftsmanship, traditions, and spirit of Japan’s mountain heartland.
