Hong Kong Arts Festival celebrates its 52nd year

The first Hong Kong Arts Festival was held in 1973 and, apart from a brief pause during the pandemic, it has been going strong ever since. The 2024 edition, which is the 52nd in the series, promises to be one of the very best, with a massive array of diverse events on its calendar.

Running from 22 February to 24 March, the festival features more than 1,400 outstanding international and local artists in over 150 performances. These are complemented by a schedule of over 350 outreach and educational events, covering music, Chinese opera, dance, theatre and multimedia. Particular highlights this year are the official opening event, the Bayerische Staatsoper’s performance of Ariadne auf Naxos by Richard Strauss. The closing event, a Shanghai Ballet performance of A Sigh of Love, promises to be every bit as impressive and enthralling.

The festival team has invested heavily to bring a host of internationally renowned groups and artists, such as La Scala Ballet, the Royal Lyceum Theatre Edinburgh and five-time Grammy-winning singer Angélique Kidjo to Hong Kong. In addition, several of the productions break out from the normal performance format and use innovative technology to present beloved classics in a whole new light.

Performances take place at various venues across Hong Kong, including the Hong Kong Cultural Centre in Tsim Sha Tsui, and the Hong Kong City Hall Theatre in Central.
