Japan makes debut in 2024 Michelin hotel guide

Japan’s reputation for exceptional hospitality is renowned and the Michelin Guide has recognised this with a number of the country’s best hotels included for the first time in the Michelin Key awards 2024, released in July.

These awards rate and celebrate hotels for their unique architecture and interior design, service quality and contribution to an outstanding guest experience.

Needless to say, more than a few international brand names in well-known locations have been nominated for a spot on the prestigious list. But it’s also worth noting the presence of several unique properties in destinations farther off the beaten path. Azumi Setoda, a luxurious retreat on Ikuchijima Island is surrounded by fragrant citrus groves and Setouchi’s islet-dotted blue ocean, and Amanemu in the serene Ise-Shima National Park, gives easy access to the impossibly beautiful sunsets at Ago Bay.

The times when an unforgettable luxury stay in Japan was only possible in large cities are long gone. Whether travellers are seeking a peaceful retreat from a day in a bustling metropolis or an immersion in the country’s breathtaking nature, the guide demonstrates perfectly that Japan has got it all.
