Singapore streets shine bright for Deepavali

Every autumn, Singapore bursts into colour as Diwali, or Deepavali in its original name, transforms the city into a festival of lights. One of the most important celebrations on the Hindu calendar, it symbolises the triumph of light over darkness and good over evil, and in Singapore it shines as a national holiday and a highlight of the year.

This year, the festival falls on Thursday 31 October. The heart of the celebrations is Little India, where the Deepavali Light-Up blankets the neighbourhood in glowing arches, lanterns and dazzling decorations. Bustling street bazaars line the roads, alive with the scent of spiced curries, fried savouries and syrupy sweets, while vendors showcase bright saris, garlands and festive trinkets.

Cultural performances add depth to the spectacle, from graceful classical dances and traditional music to storytelling that carries ancient legends into the present day. Visitors should also pause to admire kolam art, the intricate patterns created from coloured rice or sand and placed at the entrance of homes to welcome good fortune and the blessings of the goddess Lakshmi.

For both locals and travellers, Deepavali in Singapore is more than a festival. It is a radiant celebration of joy, togetherness and tradition, leaving memories that linger long after the final lantern fades.
