Graceful life-size puppets glide across ornate stages, their movements so fluid they seem almost alive. This is Teochew opera, a centuries-old art form blending music, drama, and puppetry that still enchants audiences in George Town today, thanks to the artistry and dedication of master performer Ling Goh.
As the fourth generation in her family to practice Teochew opera, Ling has become one of its most acclaimed champions. At the Teochew Puppet and Opera House, which she founded, visitors are welcomed into her world for an intimate and unforgettable encounter with this cultural treasure.
Performances combine stylised drama, hypnotic percussion and intricate dance sequences with puppets whose craftsmanship gives them astonishing grace and mobility. Richly embroidered costumes, hand-painted backdrops and the rhythm of traditional instruments create a spectacle that is as immersive as it is authentic. Beyond the stage, the venue also houses an exhibition space, where friendly volunteers share stories and insights that deepen appreciation for this heritage art.
By joining a performance, visitors are doing more than enjoying a dazzling show. They are supporting Ling Goh’s tireless mission to preserve her family’s legacy and ensure that Teochew opera continues to inspire and thrive in Malaysia for generations to come.
