Destination Asia’s Indonesia team has launched a new half-day tour through the fascinating Dutch colonial history that is found in and around Semarang, the largest city of central Java.
With an emphasis on culture and the city’s richly diverse architecture, the first highlight of the tour is the majestic Sam Po Kong Temple, a sacred site that honours the great Chinese Admiral Zheng He, an explorer from the Ming Dynasty. He landed here in the 15th century and was greatly instrumental in establishing Semarang as a vital port and a major hub for the lucrative Asian spice trade.
Next stop is Lawang Sewu, the old headquarters of the Indonesian Railways Company. The building holds a darker history and many locals believe it to be haunted. The journey continues to Kota Lama, Semarang’s old town, full of charming, beautifully restored buildings. It then draws to a close with a delightful dinner at Marabunta Restaurant, an old Dutch theatre that personifies colonial elegance. The experience of dining in such a historically rich location is truly priceless.
