The Long-Awaited Studio Ghibli Theme Park is Now Open

Given the box-office smash success of its multi award-winning animated films, the opening of Studio Ghibli’s theme park near Nagoya can be confidently expected to draw millions of fans from all over the world.

As you might expect from such an innovative studio, this is a very different take on the traditional theme park. Brilliantly placed amid extensive forestland, it has no rides, but it does offer a truly unique experience for its visitors, as they wander through the 200-hectare venue and have close encounters with many of the most legendary Ghibli sets and characters.

Two further parts are still under development but features open so far include Ghibli’s Grand Warehouse – a children’s play area with a café, shops, a movie showroom and a 6.3-metre replica airship from Laputa: Castle In The Sky. As children form a huge part of the Ghibli fanbase, this is likely to be an immensely popular attraction.

Then there’s the Hill of Youth, a life-sized re-creation of the Chikyuya antique shop from the movie Whisper of the Heart and Dondoko Forest, which is another perfect re-imagining of Satsuki and May’s house from My Neighbour Totoro.
