While Chinese opera is rightly renowned and venerated, it may initially reach a niche audience. Determined to overcome that and make it a great deal more accessible, the organisers of the 12th Chinese Opera Festival in Hong Kong have taken a radical new approach to the program, packing it with explanatory talks, Q&A sessions, presentations, masterclass exchange activities, school tours with guided viewings, art showcases and more.
Running from June to mid-September and inaugurated for the first time into the overarching Chinese Culture Festival, this event showcases all the main strands of the operatic tradition, with Cantonese, Chiuchow, Wu and Peking styles all featured, among others.
While they is a wide arrange of performances to choose from, some unmissable events include Seven Heroes and Five Gallants, a breathtaking martial arts spectacular in the Peking style, and The Jade Dragonfly, a Yue-style performance with Wang Junan, a true superstar of the genre.
