Exploring Sabah’s newest accommodation experiences

Destination Asia Malaysia’s Reservations team recently travelled to Sabah on a familiarisation trip, carrying out a series of site inspections to deepen their knowledge of new accommodation and experiences across Malaysian Borneo.

The itinerary included visits to The Ormond Hotel Sandakan and the newly opened Borneo Nature Lodge (2), allowing the team to assess each property’s facilities, guest experience, and suitability for a range of itineraries. Alongside the inspections, the visit also strengthened relationships with local partners while providing valuable insight into the region’s evolving tourism offering.

One of the standout visits was to Borneo Nature Lodge (2), where sustainability is incorporated throughout the property’s design. Built with innovative construction methods that reduce reliance on traditional materials while improving energy efficiency, the lodge reflects the growing focus on responsible tourism in the Kinabatangan region. Its thoughtful approach complements one of Southeast Asia’s most celebrated wildlife destinations, renowned for its rich biodiversity and river-based wildlife encounters.

Regular site visits play an important role in ensuring Destination Asia’s teams maintain up-to-date, first-hand product knowledge. By experiencing new properties and destinations firsthand, the team is better equipped to design tailored itineraries and recommend the experiences best suited to each traveller exploring Malaysia.
