Southeast Asia’s Primary Biosphere Reserve

Destination Asia Cambodia has created an exceptional environmentally aware program to reveal the beauty of Prek Toal Village nearby Tonle Sap Lake. Guests rise early to watch the sunrise as they journey by boat across a flooded forest lake to Prek Toal. The ride uncovers many fascinating facts surrounding the ecosystem and habits of local wildlife that live here.

Our destination is the Biosphere Reserve at Prek Toal – one of Southeast Asia’ most important bird sanctuaries and the single largest in the region for globally threatened water birds. Here we view a host of bird species, including Greater and Lesser Adjuncts, Black-headed Ibis, Painted Stork, Milky Stork, Spot-billed Pelican, Grey-Headed Fish Eagle and many more. Of the three Biosphere areas on the Tonle Sap Lake, Prek Toal is easily accessed from Siem Reap and the most popular with birdwatchers. If the weather permits, we finish the day with a visit to the floating village of Prek Toal before returning to Siem Reap. November – March provides the best conditions for visiting the Biosphere Reserve.
