Natural Wonders of the Tengger Caldera at Sunrise

Located a 2.5-hour drive from Surabaya, the capital of East Java, Mount Bromo is a part of the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park. Standing at 2,392 metres tall, Mount Bromo is not among the tallest of Indonesia’s mountains but its stunning beauty lies in its incredible setting.

After an early morning pick up, travel by private four-wheel drive Jeep from Plataran Bromo to the rim of Mount Penanjakan for sunrise. At 2,770 metres above sea level, the rim offers unobstructed views over the active Bromo crater and the Tengger massif with the towering Mount Semeru in the backdrop. At 3,676 metres, Mount Semeru is Java’s highest mountain and one of the most active volcanoes in Indonesia with small eruptions happening approximately every 20 minutes.

After sunrise, return to the Jeep and descend the steep slopes back to the bottom of the Tengger Caldera. Cross the Lautan Pasir (Sea of Sand) until reach a verdant savannah – an idyllic setting for an al fresco breakfast. A picnic blanket awaits guests to enjoy a delicious breakfast while taking in nature’s epic beauty and the magical landscape of the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park.

Once finished, drive back to Mount Bromo itself. A short walk through the Sea of Sand passing the Pura Luhur Poten Hindu temple will bring guests back to the base of Mount Bromo. The final climb of 250 steps to the rim of the crater rewards intrepid travellers with yet more incredible vistas of the active crater.
