Japan welcomes back the Nagasaki Lantern Festival

Japan was isolated from the world for almost three centuries, except for a few port cities where foreign ships were allowed to dock and trade goods. One such port was Nagasaki, which is now a sprawling city with a fascinating multicultural atmosphere.

A highlight of its calendar, the Nagasaki Lantern Festival, started out as a relatively small affair held by Chinese residents at the Lunar New Year. It has since spread from Chinatown to envelop the entire city in lights and festivities for two weeks in late winter.

In February 2024, the festival returns after a three-year hiatus and this year it promises to be bigger and brighter than ever. This vibrant event features a stunning array of colourful lanterns which adorn the streets, temples and houses, casting a warm and inviting aura across the city. Visitors can expect an eclectic blend of entertainment, from captivating lion dances and masked performances to impressive parades and hands-on lantern-making workshops.

This remarkable event perfectly symbolises the cultural diversity and spiritual harmony that Nagasaki is known for. It’s sure to leave a lasting impression and become a unique memory from any trip to Japan.
