Racing to Save Bornean Sun Bears with a 5km Virtual Run

Destination Asia Malaysia in partnership with the Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre (BSBCC) held a 5km Virtual Run which took place from 15-30 November 2020. 21 runners signed up from across Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, the United States, and South Africa, helping raise approximately US$700.

The first five participants to submit their running record photos were entered into a draw to attend a live Zoom chat with Dr. Wong Siew Te, founder of the BSBCC, held on 4 December 2020.

The COVID-19 pandemic has affected everyone, including the BSBCC. The initiative not only aimed to help raise awareness on the plight of sun bears in Sandakan, but to also support the resident bears’ rehabilitation and daily care costs.

As part of the share bear adoption scheme, in July 2020 the BSBCC released Destination Asia Malaysia’s second adopted bear, Montom, back into the wild. The first adopted bear, Damai, was released in March 2018.
