Visitors to the Land of Smiles can now opt for an eco-friendly island getaway as Koh Samet becomes Thailand’s first island destination to enforce a full ban on plastic bags and foam packaging.
Before the campaign launched, a study discovered approximately 1,500 daily tourists who visit the island use an average of eight plastic bags each – accumulating to 12,000 bags being dumped every day. The ban has already made a significant difference in the amount of waste the island produces. All hotels now avoid single-use plastics and visitors violating this rule can be served a THB 1000 fine.
Koh Samet is located in Khao Laem Ya–Mu Ko Samet National Park and offers some of the finest white sandy beaches Thailand has to offer. Although it is less visited by international tourists, the island is a firm favourite among locals due to its convenient location. The small tropical island is a short ferry ride away from Rayong’s southern tip and roughly 3-hour’s drive from Bangkok.
