Regenerative farming initiative launches in Bali

Destination Asia Indonesia is delighted to announce the launch of a program in collaboration with the Begawan Foundation, a non-profit organisation based in Bali. As part of our commitment to give back to the communities we work with, this experience is dedicated to raising awareness of the importance of conservation and protecting biodiversity.

Founded in 2001, the Begawan Foundation works with Balinese farmers to revive natural rice cultivation practices that have been fading in recent decades. One of its core initiatives, launched in 2022 has successfully reintroduced the nearly extinct Mansur rice variety while restoring surrounding ecosystems and encouraging the return of native wildlife. In addition to providing training and resources, the foundation purchases farmers’ harvests at premium prices to ensure fair trade and economic sustainability.

The half-day program developed with Begawan begins with a guided exploration of traditional farming practices, including a demonstration of Bali’s ancient Subak irrigation system, a sophisticated network of water channels that has supported rice cultivation since the 9th century. The experience concludes with a seasonal three-course lunch at Begawan Biji, a picturesque farm-to-table restaurant set among rice terraces, featuring locally sourced ingredients and regional flavours.
